"Shortchange your education now and you may be short of change the rest of your life." - Author Unknown
The Pencil Project is an annual event where we help qualifying low-income families with the necessary supplies/tuition for their children's school year.
The school year can be expensive. Between clothes (little kids seem to grow out of their winter clothes each year) and school requirements, getting ready for school can create a severe impact on a family's income.
It is a wonderful feeling, though, to know that the children we help this year will be able to start school not only with the supplies they need, but also with a few new outfits. What a way to help the children really feel that going back to school is a time to be celebrated.
By giving these children the tools that they need to succeed, we, as a community, will benefit greatly. Our children are our future and each one of them has special qualities that we need to nurture.
In 2007, we have approximately 212 kids registered for the Pencil Project. They were able to get supplies, to go school shopping, and the pre-schoolers were helped with school fees. Wal-Mart is where we do the shopping and they are GREAT!
A Special Thanks :
We cannot begin to say enough thanks to the wonderful group of people at Wal-Mart for all the aid we are given to complete this program. The sales clerks and changing room attendants are so gracious when we come in and it is something when you have 20 or 30 children, at a time, shopping and trying on clothes.
In the past, Wal-Mart has provided milk and cookies for the kids and allowed them to watch a movie while they waited for their parents to check out. Thanks go out to the employees who work in the concession area during this time.
The Pencil Project would not be the success that it is without the generosity and caring of Wal-Mart and its employees.
